Custer Assault

Blast from the Past

I was watching a History channel show about WW2 German infantry weapons, and one of the scenes was a column of German soldiers coming over a hill.

It was my Ww2 re-enactor club from around 1994, and I was the last person in the formation.

The History Channel filmed us for a lot of 50th anniversary D-Day commemorative stuff, but I thought that was the end of it. Apparently I live on in Stock Film!

This has bothered me about serial documentaries such as the things that the History Channel runs; occasionally you will see them trying to illustrate some point or piece of narrative with stock footage from newsreels, but the producers of these shows are not above using footage of an event from a previous war from a generation before, or even inserting footage from a dramatic Hollywood war epic once in awhile.

So...how accurate or detailed was this particular presentation?

BTW - did you get to see the Tom Cruise movie, "Valkyrie"?

I would occasionally go out in the same events, sometimes in the same unit with titanic. depending on the unit commander, and the year, the accuracy could be spot on. The commander of S.S. Hohenstauffen, had a saying"do it right, or not at all.", and his units always looked near perfect. other units were echoes of that. titanic, with his camouflage smock and gear looked pretty good back in the day.

Actually in this particular scene, nobody was wearing camo. They were talking abotu the German armies prefrence for submachine guns and teh first two people in the formation had MP-40's.

I was all the way in the back with a bolt action, so not interesting for this particular presentation.
