Figures

Just like "Custer" on livejournal goes to a long dead account that was used only one day, so does "custer" on Twitter go to an account that was used once for a couple of postings and then abandoned. So I'm "custer37" instead.

Why... too much spam on the plain name without the numeral attached?

Nah - I've had custer@hotmail.com for over 16 years, lately its been fun as several people seem to list it as their email address when they sign up for stuff, I assume to avoid spam. So I get their spam. And their account.

Why a number, though?

You can try to be more creative, and stick something on the name that applies to you. For instance, "zorin" is taken in many places, so I just use "zorinlynx".

Numbers always remind me of classic clueless AOLers so I groan when I see them. :)

Way back, well over 20 years ago, I actually had "Custer" on AOL. This was well before WWW even existed. I gave it up, and when I went back in it was taken by some one else. 37 is my favorite number for reasons I don't remember, so I usually just stick that on when the name is taken.

Its not just a rendom set of numbers - it does have a meaning.
