This morning I got up at 5AM to get ready for school, and only got up because my alarm clock is battery powered. The house was dark again.
This time the outage went a lot farther. The other side of the the Santa Clarita river was out, and everything between my house and the bus stop was dark as well. The only lights were in the front yards of three houses I passed on the walk to the bus stop that apparently had solar charged driveway lights.
At the Granary Square mall the employees of Longs Drugs were sitting out in front of the store with nothing to do. The Starbucks employee managed to get in but was just reading an instruction manual by flashlight - probably figuring out what the company policy was under such conditions.
The Ralphs had power - but nothing around it did, which leads me to believe they had their own backup generators. Employees were inside restocking shelves like nothing unusual was going on.
Main source of entertainment was the deputy sheriff in the car parked in the intersection. He was making no attempt to direct traffic, just occasionally bleeping the siren or yelling at people to slow down. Pretty worthless. Eventually he threw out some traffic cones and flares and drove off.
Bus came at the usual time, and it wasn't until we got to Lyons avenue, over a mile away, before we got to anywhere that had power. I still have no idea what caused it, as there was no indication of an accident anywhere. Certainly wasn't heavy air conditioner use int he middle of the night either, and everything was fine when I went to bed around 11PM the night before.
