Silent Movie Theater

There is only one movie house left in the whole country that was built with the sole purpose of showing silent films. I went there last night to see a series of Charlie Chaplin's earliest films, all pre or during WW1.

They had someone playing the organ who had actually played silent movies as early as 1924. Still going strong. Parking was a pain as they had no lot of their own and street parking was scarce, and I had to battle traffic to the Hollywood Bowl both going and coming, but the show was worth it.

One scene in "Pay Day" had Chaplin come home to find about 20 cats on his kitchen table, which all run out the window as soon as he comes home. Lots of "awww" from the audience. This group had a lot in common.

My grandparents took me there when I was a kid. It was some sort of special event with Laurel and Hardy look-alikes. They closed down the nearby street to stage a pie fight. Afterwards they showed a few of the films, accompanied by real-time organ music. It was cool.
